Marijuana and hair, friend or foe?

While there aren’t any studies directly linking cannabis to hair loss, we do know that smoking has significant links to poor follicle health.

Cigarette smoke is thought to damage hair follicle DNA, cause inflammation, and create an imbalance in tissue remodeling during the hair growth phase.

A 2017 study found that individuals who smoked had a significantly increased risk of alopecia and when combined with a high BMI, smokers were around 6 times more likely to have hair loss.

While this study doesn’t involve cannabis, it is possible that cannabis smoke could contain similar compounds that might affect hair growth.

When it comes to the main active compounds of cannabis, it seems that cannabis might actually be able to help hair growth.

THC, is one of the main active cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and has been shown to have some pretty significant therapeutic effects.

Research has shown that THC can block some of the hormones that result in testosterone production.

It is THC’s potential to lower testosterone that makes it a possible hair growth solution.

Testosterone can be converted into dihydrotestosterone or DHT, a hormone that can do a lot of damage to hair by causing follicles to miniaturize and eventually die leading to balding.

THC has also been shown in one study to act as a stress reliever.

Stress can be a major cause of hair loss as it produces cortisol, a hormone that is thought to affect hair follicle function.

One animal study found that primates with alopecia had higher levels of cortisol than control groups.

For those wanting to make the most out of their hair, proven treatments such as laser light therapy could be a great solution.

Laser therapy uses red and near-infrared light to improve hair growth by reducing DHT levels and increasing blood flow.

While more research is needed to investigate cannabis’ effect on hair growth, some early signs seem to point to cannabis as a hair helper!
