You might have thought of acupuncture as a treatment for a stiff back, but could this ancient remedy also help to grow your hair?!
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that uses tiny needles to target specific body points, depending on your symptoms.
The idea is that the needles help to restore energy flow by releasing blocked qi.
Qi is a Chinese word for the energy force that flows through everything.
One 2011 study compared acupuncture treatment with topical minoxidil treatment for the goal of hair growth.
All participants in the study had alopecia areata and were treated with their respective treatments for 4 months.
It turns out that the acupuncture actually worked as a better hair growth treatment than minoxidil!
Acupuncture may be able to increase blood flow, which is key to scalp and hair health.
One study even found that participants with male pattern baldness were shown to have 2.6 times less subcutaneous scalp blood flow than participants with no hair loss.
Another study found that acupuncture treatment in healthy participants resulted in significantly improved blood flow in a range of arteries.
So while more research is needed to understand just how effective acupuncture might be as a hair loss treatment, the early evidence is promising!
Most acupuncture research shows very few side effects, although mild reactions to the needles can include rash, bleeding, bruising, and dizziness.
Acupuncture is typically described as a relaxing experience and often you won’t even feel the needles being inserted.
Depending on the target areas you’ll either lie on your back or front and will stay in this position for up to 30 minutes.
You’ll need repeated treatments in order to see results. And remember to always check if your practitioner is licensed!
